What Matters Most
Jennifer James
So, one of the many take home inspirations from our friend's movie "The Song" is just the reminder of what really matters. So much of what we put our time and effort into - even with the best of intentions, doesn't matter in the big picture.
I had the opportunity to go work on a new song in OKC the last couple days and it was truly great, and I am really excited to have it finished and to connect with other people through it, BUT I was reminded of the same thing as I was flying home, excited to see my people. My family matters. God matters. My marriage matters. My kids matter. (not in that order, but you know)
I always feel good being reminded of that. How easy it is to get distracted and caught up in other things, even good things, but ultimately things that don't matter.
All that being said, this concept reminds me, ironically, of a song on my most recent album called, "Let's Go Back". I wrote the song kinda as a tribute to all the advice and insight people try to give you along your journey..."It goes so fast", "Enjoy it while you can" and stuff like that. When we are young and know it all, I'm not sure how well we hear them, but as times goes by - we begin to see and learn these things first hand - and we tend to agree with all those generous advice givers.
Below are the lyrics to my song. I love them. I hope to live true to them. I hope they encourage and challenge to intentionally live for what matters most.
Slow down they say, there's gotta be a better way than running round and running down Take time they pray to see the light of day cause passing by and passing through always gets the best of you
Let's go back to the start, Let's go back to the heart of it
Let's go back to what matters most
It goes so fast they swear, Enjoy it while you can; One day you'll look back with longing eyes Hold tight they plead to what you really need; Don't let those foolish wants pull you aside
Let's go back to the start, Let's go back to the heart of it
Let's go back to what matters most
Take it easy, Take it slow, like we've got nowhere to go
